Sep. 2nd, 2008 @ 10:54 am University of Washington grad school essay ... eek!
Current Mood: creative
OK! I just finished my essay questions for the University of Washington. *happy dance*

So, might anyone be willing to give input and "beta" it for me? Sorry it's not a very exciting read. And yes, it bears a remarkable resemblance to the essay I did for the University of Wisconsin -- but I fleshed it out a lot more. (They also had more questions.)

Behind a cut for my f-list's sake. =)

Woo-hoo, I've got a draft for my app to the U of Wisconsin-Milwaukee! :D A refresher on the instructions:

The Reasons Statement. "An essential part of your application, the Reasons Statement is used to determine the appropriateness of your educational and professional goals and serves as an example of your ability to express yourself in writing. In the statement:

1. Explain your reasons for pursuing graduate study.
2. Describe specific interests and your background in the field.
3. List any relevant skills or training you have acquired.
4. List relevant academic awards or honors you have received.
5. If your program requires recommendations, list the names of those individuals who will write on your behalf."

And, cue the ominous music, the essay itself -- behind an LJ-cut.

Thoughts? Does it totally suck? ;-) Is it halfway decent? I'd appreciate any input, good or bad. I really have no clue what I'm doing here, so ... yeah.

Okay, so. Finally cracking down on this grad school application.

The aim: The Reasons Statement.

I guess what throws me is that I have no idea how to approach this. I want to make it interesting, but is "interesting" what they're going for? What kind of format should I do this in? Should I just start writing? Should I treat it as one big long statement or should I break it down by number/section?

I've got bullet points so far for each question. But now comes the tricky part: the actual writing. I guess the questions I'm asking are related to the questions they're asking, because it all boils down to my ability to express myself in writing.

{pause}

At least it's not expressing myself verbally, haha. I can think about this more.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Here's the sequel to Lazing. I never meant it to wait so long, but my computer crashed, and the only copy of a major revision that survived was the one I gave to a friend. I had to get it back to copy it by typing the revisions into my computer, revising further, of course... but I finally finished all that. So here it is. {BIG SMILE}

Also about Avilee and Forster.

Characters: Forster, his Mommy, and Avilee

Prompts: Of course, she's piqued my curiosity and I'd love to read more about her...Maybe you could have the little boy try to find her by tempting every swan he meets with apples. -- Jennifer
"applepie with vanilla ice cream" – Akinaj (Sorry I lost the ice cream. It was tricky enough keeping most of the filling in the pie. {chuckle, SMILE})

Acknowledgments: I would like to thank my parents for their help. Also betaed by Jennifer.
Also thanks to Silver for inspiring me to add more of Avilee’s thoughts in the first revision.
And much thanks to Josephine for lending me her copy so I could rescue the first revision (and revise it further, of course). {Smile}

Warnings: none.

Well... write what, exactly? What are your thoughts?

Hi. A story for this prompt finally popped out the other day. I don't consider it quite final. I plan to run it by another beta or two (including folks here; if you have suggestions, please make them! {SMILE}). Even if they don't have any suggestions, I might change from "halfling" to "minikin." However, edgeofthewild prefers halflings, so I thought I'd keep them in this draft, at least. After all, the story is written to her prompt. {SMILE}

PROMPT: The feeling of being in one of the places you love most, when there's nowhere else you would rather be at that moment. -- Meagan (edgeofthewild)

This is a widow Mere story. For series description and link, see here.

Characters: Jules Lombard, Sapphire Goodbody, Violet Banks, with appearances by Marigold Banks, Durrant Lombard, Odolf Goodbody and Robin Banks.

Word count: 1,118

I would like to thank my parents for their help.

Hi folks,

As you probably know by now (at least if you're on my f-list at my normal journal, edgeofthewild), I'm applying to the Editing Certificate program at the University of Washington.

One of the things we have to include is a 250-word (max) letter of application describing a) our relevant work and volunteer experience, and/or transferable skills and knowledge of the field, and b) how I expect the program will help me meet my professional goals.

I've got it pretty much "completed," but I wondered if anyone'd be willing to beta it for me. =) I'm really stuck on what to say in the last paragraph in particular; I always get stuck there. I'm also not sure if I should include any of the contact junk or not. =) Hence the post.

So if you are willing, would you mind taking a look at it and letting me know your onion? =) Thanks!!
